About Jotunheimen

The Besseggen Ridge, the destination of our challenge, is in Jotunheimen, which translates to "Home of the Giants" in English, is a mountainous region located in central Norway. It is renowned for its majestic peaks, glaciers, deep valleys, and pristine wilderness. The history of Jotunheimen is deeply intertwined with Norway's cultural and outdoor heritage.
In ancient Norse mythology, Jotunheimen was believed to be the dwelling place of the Jotnar, powerful and mythical giants. The region's rugged and imposing landscapes might have inspired these mythical tales.
Throughout history, Jotunheimen remained largely uninhabited due to its harsh climate and challenging terrain. However, it has attracted adventurous travelers and explorers for centuries. In the 19th century, the Romantic Movement in Europe sparked an interest in nature and the outdoors, and Jotunheimen became a popular destination for Norwegian artists, writers, and intellectuals seeking inspiration from its natural beauty.
In the early 20th century, the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) played a significant role in promoting hiking and mountaineering in Jotunheimen. They established a network of trails and mountain huts, which encouraged more people to explore and enjoy the region's natural wonders.
During World War II, Jotunheimen served as a strategic location for the Norwegian resistance against the German occupation. The area provided a refuge for resistance fighters, and its rugged terrain made it difficult for occupying forces to access.
In 1980, Jotunheimen National Park was established, protecting an extensive area of approximately 1,151 square kilometers (about 444 square miles) and becoming an essential part of Norway's national park system.
Today, Jotunheimen continues to be a beloved destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a wide range of activities such as hiking, mountaineering, skiing, and wildlife watching. Its cultural and historical significance, combined with its stunning landscapes, make Jotunheimen a place of enduring allure and a symbol of Norway's deep connection to nature.
